Routing Security

As part of the DAPRA-sponsored Internet Infrastructure Protection project (IIP), Trusted Information Systems (TIS) has designed, implemented, and made available the first routing protocol with cryptographic authentication for routing information. This secure routing protocol is designed as a set of extensions to an existing protocol known as Open Shortest Path First (OSPF). Unsecure OSPF, as well as other routing protocols used in the Internet, are vulnerable to attacks and errors that can result in wide spread disruptions of the Internet. The security extensions provide the means for Internet routers to check the integrity and source authenticity of the Secure OSPF routing information before acting on that information. To facilitate the standardization and use of this technology, TIS has worked with the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) in defining this protocol specification. Additionally, TIS has made their implementation available on a worldwide basis to all but U.S.-embargoed countries.
