Network Security
Simple Network Management Protocol
At the Montreal IETF, the IETF Network Management Area Director announced the intention to form an advisory team to analyze the proposed, existing approaches for SNMP security. These approaches are commonly known as USEC and v2*. The general direction to the advisory group was to analyze the two approaches and provide recommendations to the Network Management community.
The chartered name assigned for the group was the Security and Administrative Framework Evolution for SNMP Advisory Team. Since the group has mostly referred to itself as the "Advisory Team," that name will be used to refer to the group.
The following items constitute the Advisory Team report:
- The Advisory Team charter, membership, and work plan was announced to the SNMP and SNMPV2 mail lists on August 27, 1996.
- An interim report on theTeam's progress was sent to the SNMP and SNMPV2 mail lists on November 27, 1996.
- The Team made a presentation on our recommended approach at the San Jose IETF in December 1996. The slides from this presentation are available in several formats.
- An example Elements of Procedure is provided as a proof of concept for the recommended approach.
- The results of many of the Team's on-line and face-to-face discussions are documented in what we call the list of Issues and Items.
The main technical aspects of the Team's recommended approach are contained in the slides and list of Issues and Items.
Based on the work of the Advisory Team, the Network Management Area Director has recommended establishing an open Working Group to proceed with developing the necessary specifications for SNMP-NG. The Working Group is expected to be chartered in the near future.
