SNMP - Slides

This is an introductory page to the results of the SNMP-NG Advisory Team. The Advisory Team was formed after the 36th IETF to analyze the proposed, existing approaches for SNMP security. These approaches are commonly known as USEC and v2*. The general direction to the Advisory Team was to analyze the two approaches and provide recommendations to the Network Management community.

The Advisory Team reported the results of their analysis at the first Network Management Area open meeting at the 37th IETF on December 9th. Since the Team continued work through the IETF, copies of the slides were not distributed at meeting. Because of the last minute editing, the slides presented at the open had some minor errors. These errors have been corrected and a few minor clarifying changes have been made to the version of slides referenced on this page.

A few words on annotations used on the slides:

  • Each illustration has a set of arrows which indicate direction of a "flow" (i.e., data moving from one module/sub-module to another):
  • Each solid arrow has words identifying the inputs at the tail and a number at the head.
  • Each number on an arrow indicates the sequence of events associated with that picture.
  • Solid arrows indicate that the particular "flow" is needed for every occurrence of the function illustrated in the picture.
  • Dashed arrows indicate that the particular "flow" may or may not be needed for every occurrence of the function illustrated in the picture. (for example, when processing a received message, if that message has privacy encryption then it will go in and out of the priv sub-module but if there is no privacy encryption then it will not be sent through the priv sub-module.)

The slides are available in several formats:
